Demand for a “PERMANENT BAN ON GUTKHA” in TamilNadu

Tamilnadu People’s Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC) along with Public Health Organizations, Health Professionals, Social Workers, Civil Societies and Concerned citizens urge the Tamilnadu government to come with a Permanent Ban on Gutkha containing tobacco and nicotine under the State’s Specific Act.
A large-scale demonstration was held today in front of Rajarathinam stadium, Egmore, Chennai, urging the government to impose a permanent ban on gutkha and pan masala, which pose severe health risks. Civil Societies, medical professionals, students, and concerned citizens gathered to voice their demand for stricter enforcement of anti-tobacco laws.
Despite temporary bans imposed by the state government, the illegal trade of gutkha continues to thrive, putting public health at great risk. Protesters urged the authorities to strictly enforce the law and implement a permanent ban to completely eradicate the availability of gutkha in the state.
The key guest speakers who participated in the demonstration and shared their valuable insights regarding the Permanent Ban are: Mr. Kannan, Mr. Kaarai Maindhan, Mr. Vetri Thamizha, Ms. Shanthi Kamala Sekaran, Mr. Sharfuden, Mr. Bosco, Ms. Shanthi, Mr. Chandra Gupta – Dental Doctor, and Mr. Cyril Alexander.
At last, the demonstration ended by emphasizing the importance of strict enforcement of the gutkha ban in Tamil Nadu. The speakers highlighted the severe health risks associated with its consumption, especially the rising cases of oral cancer and addiction. The event concluded with a strong message urging collective responsibility to uphold the ban and promote a healthier, tobacco-free society. The speakers and participants came to a conclusion by highlighting the points that can be way forwarded for permanent ban on gutkha and panmasala in Tamilnadu.
The way forwards for the permanent ban are:
1. To make amendment in some sections in The Tamilnadu Public Health Act 1939 for permanent ban.
2. To enforce a permanent ban within the provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act 2002.
3. To make specific amendments in Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 under the Section 34.
4. To make amendments by the state government under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003.
5. To introduce a Special Ordinance for the permanent ban on Gutka, Pan Masala and other chewable tobacco products in Tamil Nadu.
